Floraelia Devinian's smile grew wider and she nodded slowly at Tahliya's honesty.
"In the Council meeting earlier the Magistrate decreed that every Councilor was to find and begin cultivating a nominee to bring before the Council. I'm sure you're aware that there are currently three seats that need to be filled. It will only be two that can be vied for as Alpha has put forth his own nominee for one of those Districts. "
The Mithrian set her teacup down on the desk in front of her and regarded Tahliya with a measured seriousness, her posture impeccable.
"What I need to know in order to begin that process and declare you my nominee is that you understand that the people of Vascxious Sigma will be who you serve. Not the Magistrate. Not whatever other Councilor you like or dislike. You will be responsible for an entire District worth of people and how well you run that District will either contribute to or do damage to the City of Vascxious Sigma."
She paused with a rueful smile and placed her hands one atop the other in her lap.
"It is not my intention to lecture you, dear Tahliya, but I would be remiss if I did not set clear expectations for any who would bear the weight of my assurances and my screening. I need to see for myself that you are the best choice I can procure, and that is not settled with a simple conversation at a midnight hour. My intention tonight is merely to gauge your interest."

Tahliya blinked slowly as she listened to Floraelia move on from her admittance that she wanted a place on the Council to asserting that she would back her nomination. The speed at which things were moving was enough to give the Operative vertigo, but she kept her cool and nodded along to the Councilor opposite her's assertions regarding the position, and broke in when appropriate.
"I understand what it means, and the large significance of the position. I'll be the first person to admit that I need more experience to be the best Councilor I could be, but I believe I have the abilities to begin and learn quickly enough to benefit the city as a whole."
Tahliya was being honest with Floraelia, but as the woman continued, it also occurred to the Operative that the Second District Councilor was putting her in a somewhat awkward position vis-a-vis her current assignment as Keretheriel's aide. Based on her prior experience, the Operative's first instinct was to keep that information to herself, but Tahliya understood that it would both not be secret for long and likely cast a shadow of possible dishonesty over her relationship with Floraelia when she appeared later at Kereth's side for a meeting. Therefore, once Floraelia had finished speaking, Tahliya collected her thoughts and carefully began laying out her own potential entanglements, which Floraelia should be aware of.
"I don't take it as a lecture, and I understand your caution - I'm something of an unknown variable, even among those affiliated with the Tower. Honestly, I wasn't expecting you to approach me in such a way - I had no indication that you might consider me a potential candidate for the position."
Tahliya stopped and briefly (and visibly) collected her thoughts before continuing, carefully sounding out her words to slow them and make them hit the air with a touch more diplomacy than the Operative's usual tone would have allowed.
"There is something else that you should know, that may either complicate or ease matters going forward: the Magistrate has currently tasked me with acting as an aide to the oncoming nominee for Seventh District, one Miss Keretheriel Den S'laesenar. Therefore, my current responsibility is assisting her in networking with the current Council members, as well as orienting her to the city. Do you think these duties will interfere with any needs you have for me as we begin the process?"
The assumption at the end of her statement was made confidently - Tahliya understood Floraelia's intent, and while she hadn't exactly parsed out the pathway this opportunity it took before reaching Floraelia's hands, due to be handed to Tahliya, the Operative was more than willing to seize it and see where things would lead.
